I read the book a few years ago and hoped the movie would remind me of the story line and why I liked it so much - Martinez is a gifted writer and storyteller. With so many great names in British drama, John Hurt, Anna Massey, Jim carter, I expected much more than this. The action was disjointed, as if trying to create a precis of the novel, Wood's acting was - er, wooden; Hurt was a caricature rather than a character; Martin's relationship with Lorna was unexplored; that with Beth even more so. No way could Martinez' novel be condensed into 1 hour 45 minutes and tell the whole story credibly and seamlessly. And the generous dispersal of the very necessary Mathematics was no doubt put there to make us all believe we were watching something intelligent. We weren't. The novel is intelligent. This anodyne, less-than-satisfactory movie adaptation is not.

Why hasn't John Hurt gotten more lead roles? This is like Good Will Hunting meets CSI... sort of. 3.5/5. Elijah Wood, not his best, but alright, he seems affected, has got to relax or study his craft more maybe, too much time doing the Frodo thing, living that easy life down on the set in New Zealand? Good story though. Hits the spot if you're in the mood for some puzzles and a thriller.

Very good story line, loved the mystery, the actors are very very impressive to watch..Elijah wood does a fantastic job. Watching this movie makes me realize how beautiful math can be sometimes. The end wasn't to surprising but it was okay, i give this a 9/10.

I liked this film. If I said why it would give too much of it away. I'm going to try to be like the old man.

I agree with "infernala" Martin you idiot, why did you let her go! Good film and great cast. I personally watched it because Leonor Watling (Lorna) was in it, they don't get much more beautiful than that. 7/10

An interesting and clever story about an American student and an English professor who manage to solve the mystery of murders in Oxford society with the help of mathematics' symbols, puzzles and theories.
